The short answer

Usually, yes — most problems in a prefab (factory-built) fireplace are parts that can be replaced: cracked firebox panels, a rusted chase cover, a stuck damper or a worn spark screen. It's time to replace the whole unit when the firebox itself is warped or burned through, or when the matching parts are no longer made. Repairs have to use parts meant for that model, because a prefab fireplace is tested and listed as one system.

How to tell if yours is prefab

Look for a metal firebox lined with flat panels instead of firebrick laid in mortar, a metal grille or louvers above or below the opening, and a metal plate with a model number inside the opening or behind the grille. Outside, a prefab fireplace usually vents through a framed, sided chimney (a "chase") topped with a metal chase cover, not a brick stack. They're common in homes built from the 1980s on.

What usually breaks

  • Firebox panels: hairline cracks are normal; panels that are crumbling or show gaps down to the metal need replacing.
  • Chase cover: a flat or rusted cover pools water, rusts through and drips down the flue — a common cause of rust in the firebox.
  • Damper: warped or stuck, so smoke spills or heat escapes.
  • Chimney pipe: sections can separate or corrode, especially if the cover has leaked for years.

When to replace the whole unit

A warped or burned-through firebox, a cracked steel back, or a unit so old its parts aren't available any more. At that point many owners switch to a gas insert or a new wood unit rather than rebuild the old one. We photograph what we find and show you both options before anything is quoted.

What repairs cost

The inspection is free. Damper repair or replacement runs $180–$450, firebox repairs $300–$800, and a chase cover or cap $250–$450. If the flue needs a closer look, a Level 2 camera inspection is $199.

FAQ

More answers

Can I use firebrick in a prefab fireplace?

No. Use the replacement panels made for your model. Regular firebrick and mortar change how the unit handles heat.

Why is there rust in my prefab fireplace?

Almost always water coming down from a rusted or flat chase cover on top of the chase. Replacing the cover and checking the pipe below usually fixes it.

Can I put a gas insert in a prefab fireplace?

Only an insert listed for use in that factory-built fireplace. Many owners replace the old unit instead; we'll check the model plate and tell you what's allowed.
